Kyrgyz-Uzbek Border Delimitation Talks in Tashkent

Kyrgyzstan and Uzbekistan Make Progress on Border Talks
Bishkek, Kyrgyz Republic – On April 24, 2025, government delegations from Kyrgyzstan and Uzbekistan convened in Tashkent for a significant meeting addressing the delimitation and demarcation of their shared state border, as reported by the State Committee for National Security (SCNS).
One of the key points discussed was the projected border line which preserves the Chechme (Chashma) spring within Kyrgyz territorial bounds. The delegations approved the foundational terms of a draft agreement aimed at the joint utilization of this vital water resource, underscoring its significance as a shared asset for both nations.
The discussions reinforced that the Chechme spring is a common heritage for the peoples of Kyrgyzstan and Uzbekistan. The parties reached a mutual agreement ensuring unrestricted access for Kyrgyz citizens to the spring while allowing the Uzbek side to utilize two-thirds of the spring’s current water body. This arrangement aims to establish clear coordination for any activities that might affect the quantity and quality of the water.
In a spirit of camaraderie, both delegations committed to fostering a cooperative environment, ensuring that neither nation would impose measures that could obstruct the full use of the spring by their citizens.
Looking ahead, the representatives pledged to expedite the signing of an agreement regarding the joint management of the Chechme spring as well as to finalize the delineation of the state border between their countries.
In addition to discussions on water resources, the talks touched upon the operational status of specific border checkpoints. The parties emphasized the urgency of updating the existing protocols established in 2004, aiming to improve conditions for their respective populations.
To facilitate further cooperation, both sides agreed to convene a working group comprised of representatives from their respective authorities. A protocol documenting the outcomes of the negotiations was duly signed, marking a step forward in bilateral relations.
This meeting reflects the ongoing commitment of Kyrgyzstan and Uzbekistan to resolve outstanding border issues and enhance collaboration for mutual benefit.
