Kyrgyzstan and Italy reach agreement on exchange of convicted nationals
On April 23, 2025, the Parliament of Kyrgyzstan made a significant decision by adopting a bill in three readings concerning the ratification of an agreement with Italy on the transfer of convicted persons. This crucial agreement, which was signed on October 3, 2024, during President Sadyr Japarov’s visit to Rome, aims to facilitate the transfer of Kyrgyzstanis serving sentences in Italy back to their homeland.
The background statement accompanying the bill highlights the importance of this agreement in ensuring that citizens of Kyrgyzstan who have been convicted in Italy can return to their families and communities. Currently, there are ten Kyrgyzstani individuals serving sentences in Italy, all related to violations of immigration laws.
Deputy Prosecutor General Umutkan Konkubaeva provided further insight into the situation, emphasizing the significance of this agreement in addressing the needs of these individuals and enabling them to serve their sentences in their home country.
