Kyrgyzstan and Kazakhstan Discuss Coordination of Locust Control Measures
In a recent video conference, representatives of authorized bodies from Kyrgyzstan and Kazakhstan came together to discuss the coordination of locust control measures in border areas. The Ministry of Agriculture’s press service reported that state measures are currently underway to combat locusts in the southern regions of Kyrgyzstan, with the necessary equipment and pesticides fully deployed.
Fortunately, no locusts have been registered in the Chui and Talas regions bordering Kazakhstan at this time. However, regional specialists are conducting extensive monitoring to stay ahead of any potential infestations. The Kyrgyz side proposed a joint plan of action to combat harmful insects within the framework of an intergovernmental agreement, and both parties agreed to implement practical steps based on this plan.
During the conference, Kazakhstan’s Chairman of the State Inspection Committee in the Agro-Industrial Complex, S. Kanybekov, provided an update on the situation in Kazakhstan, particularly in the regions bordering Kyrgyzstan. Over 176,000 hectares in the Zhambyl region and 63,400 hectares in the Almaty region have been inspected, with chemical treatments conducted in affected areas using specialized equipment.
Kazakhstani specialists reassured their Kyrgyz counterparts that the risk of locusts spreading from Kazakhstan to Kyrgyzstan is minimal due to timely and effective chemical treatments. Both parties agreed to continue joint activities to prevent the spread of locusts across borders and protect agricultural land.
The collaborative efforts between Kyrgyzstan and Kazakhstan demonstrate a commitment to addressing environmental challenges and safeguarding the livelihoods of farmers in the region.
