Kyrgyzstan Begins Production of Armored Vehicles: From Buses to Armored Cars

Kyrgyzstan Develops First Domestic Armored Vehicle – Kalkan
Kyrgyzstan is in the process of developing its first domestic armored vehicle, named Kalkan, which translates to “shield” in Kyrgyz. The project is being spearheaded by entrepreneur Mirbek Askaliev.
According to Askaliev, the unveiling of the country’s first domestic armored vehicle is set for the fall of 2025. Currently, the combat vehicle is being assembled in a classified workshop, where even journalists are not permitted to enter.
The idea for the project originated in 2019 when Kyrgyzstan acquired a VIN code for vehicle production, which included armored military vehicles. This led to the development of the domestic armored vehicle, Kalkan.
Kalkan is designed to NATO standards, with the ability for various modifications to be made. It can be equipped with a large-caliber machine gun or even a multiple launch rocket system. The vehicle’s four-wheel drive allows it to navigate through rugged terrain, while its reinforced armor provides protection against small arms fire and infantry weapons.
The armored vehicle has a capacity for ten fully equipped personnel and is made according to international and NATO standards, with armor that corresponds to the B-6 protection class. This level of protection makes it competitive for export to international markets.
At least 75% of the armored vehicle’s components for military purposes are produced in Kyrgyzstan. The armor plating is purchased abroad and then customized by local craftsmen according to Kalkan’s specifications.
Mirbek Askaliev’s team is currently working on three prototypes, which will undergo testing at a military training ground abroad. Only after passing standardized testing will the vehicles be eligible to participate in international tenders for equipment supply. Askaliev also mentioned that if the domestic army requires such equipment, they are prepared to supply it at cost.
The development of the armored vehicle is not Askaliev’s first venture in the automotive industry. He initially started with the production of buses, one of which was tested by President Sadyr Japarov in 2022. Although a potential deal with the capital’s City Hall to purchase a batch of buses fell through, Askaliev has continued his work with the production of Kalkan armored military vehicles.
