Kyrgyzstan Boosts Electricity Generation at Small HPPs in 2024

Energy Sector in Kyrgyzstan Exceeds Planned Indicators for 2024
Bishkek – The Energy Minister of Kyrgyzstan, Taalaibek Ibraev, recently shared promising news about the energy sector’s performance in 2024. During a briefing in Bishkek, he revealed that the country has surpassed its planned indicators for hydropower and small hydroelectric power plants.
In 2024, the electricity generation reached 12.8 billion kilowatt-hours at hydropower plants, 1.8 billion at heating and power plants, and 250 million at small hydropower plants. Notably, small hydropower plants currently produce 400 million kilowatt-hours.
With a total energy consumption expected to reach 17.5 billion kilowatt-hours in 2024, Kyrgyzstan had to resort to importing energy from neighboring countries to cover the deficit. The country imported 1.13 billion kilowatt-hours from Kazakhstan, 1.7 billion from Turkmenistan (surpassing the contractual 1.5 billion kilowatt-hours), and 485 million from Uzbekistan (meeting 100% of the agreed volume).
Minister Ibraev assured that all necessary agreements for electricity imports in 2025 have already been finalized, ensuring a stable energy supply for the upcoming year.
These positive developments highlight Kyrgyzstan’s progress in the energy sector and its commitment to meeting the country’s energy needs efficiently and sustainably.
