Kyrgyzstan Braces for Another Low Water Season
On January 12, 2024, the Deputy Chairman of the Cabinet of Ministers and Minister of Water Resources, Agriculture, and Processing Industry of Kyrgyzstan, Bakyt Torobaev, announced plans to repair at least 540 kilometers of irrigation canals and build daily and ten-day regulation ponds in 2024. This initiative comes in response to the anticipated low water levels due to the dry climate.
In addition to these measures, Torobaev emphasized the personal responsibility of district heads for ensuring water supply to farmers. He urged them to submit proposals and begin active work on renovating facilities using the “people’s construction” method.
Furthermore, Torobaev called on farmers to openly communicate their seed needs to district heads, as the state is prepared to provide them. He also reassured that the country has sufficient reserves of fuels and lubricants, with the State Material Reserves Fund currently holding 10,000 tons.
These announcements signal the government’s proactive approach to addressing the challenges posed by the anticipated low water levels, demonstrating its commitment to supporting farmers and ensuring the efficient use of water resources in Kyrgyzstan.
