Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu has vowed victory following a massive overnight air attack by Iran, which intensified the conflict in the Middle East. An influential member of Israel’s war cabinet also stated that the country will retaliate at a time and in a manner of its choosing.
In a Twitter post on April 14, Netanyahu expressed confidence in overcoming the recent challenges. The overnight attack saw hundreds of drones and missiles launched by Iran intercepted by Israel and its allies. The intense confrontation resulted in only light damage to one Israeli military installation and a young girl critically injured.
Israeli military spokesman Rear Admiral Daniel Hagari declared the Iranian attack as foiled, with approximately 99 percent of the incoming vehicles intercepted. This led to what he called a “very significant strategic success.” U.S., British, and French forces collaborated with Israel to shoot down the incoming projectiles, preventing further damage.
In response, Iranian President Ebrahim Raisi issued a warning against Israel, stating that Tehran’s retaliation would be decisive and stronger. The Iranian military claimed that its objectives had been achieved successfully, ending the operation after the attacks on Israel. Iranian armed forces chief of staff Major General Mohammad Bagheri cautioned against any further retaliation, threatening U.S. assets if Washington assisted Israel in any way.
Amid these developments, the United States engaged in direct communications with Iran through Swiss intermediaries before and after the attack on Israeli territory. President Joe Biden convened G7 allies to discuss the escalating situation in the Middle East and reiterated support for Israel, while also expressing a desire to avoid a wider war with Iran.
European leaders condemned the attack and called for de-escalation in the region to restore stability. The EU foreign ministers planned to meet on April 16 to address the rising tensions resulting from the strike. Iran summoned the ambassadors of Britain, France, and Germany to question their response to Tehran’s strikes on Israel, accusing them of double standards.
The attack marked the first direct confrontation between Israel and Iran on each other’s soil, showcasing a new level of aggression. The tension between the two countries has been escalating, with Iran responding to what it called aggression against its diplomatic premises in Syria.
As the world watches the situation unfold, there are concerns about the potential for a wider conflict in the region. United Nations Secretary-General Antonio Guterres urged de-escalation and emphasized the need to prevent a devastating region-wide escalation. Pope Francis also made a plea for peace and an end to actions that could lead to further violence.
