Kyrgyzstan Faces Peak of External Debt Payments

In a recent board meeting of Osh City Hall, the head of the Cabinet of Ministers of Kyrgyzstan, Akylbek Japarov, announced that the country has reached the peak of payments on its external debt. According to Japarov, large amounts of debt will have to be paid until 2030, with payments of $344 million in 2023, $400 million in 2024, $430 million in 2025, and $390 million in 2026.

Japarov emphasized the need for collective effort, stating, “We are all in the same boat called ‘Kyrgyzstan,’ so we need the work and contribution of everyone. We must work as one team.”

As of the end of November last year, the public debt of the Kyrgyz Republic, including both external and internal debt, totaled $6,115.99 billion (544,550.43 billion soms). Of this, $4,545.11 billion (404,683.78 billion soms) is external debt, while $1,570.88 billion (139,866.65 billion soms) is internal debt.

The announcement serves as a reminder of the challenges faced by Kyrgyzstan in managing its debt burden, and underscores the importance of strategic financial planning and collaborative efforts to address the issue.
