Kyrgyzstan Migrant Population in Russia Cut in Half

Migration from Kyrgyzstan to Russia Decreases by Half

In a recent press conference, the Foreign Minister of Kyrgyzstan, Jeenbek Kulubaev, announced that the number of migrants from Kyrgyzstan to Russia has halved. According to the Russian Ministry of Internal Affairs, there were 650,000 migrants from Kyrgyzstan registered in 2023. However, by the end of 2024, this number has decreased to 350,000 people.

Kulubaev also mentioned that many Kyrgyz migrants are now in Turkey, the United States, and Europe. The government is in negotiations with Germany, which is offering job opportunities to Kyrgyz nationals. Additionally, efforts are being made to bring Kyrgyzstanis back to their homeland by initiating large labor projects. For instance, the construction of the Kambarata hydropower station is underway, creating around 5,000 job positions.

Rosstat, the Russian statistical agency, released data on international migration, showing that in the first nine months of 2024, there was a migration gain of 83,500 people who moved to a permanent place of residence in Russia. This number is slightly lower compared to the same period in 2023, when the gain was 88,700 people.

Overall, the decrease in migration from Kyrgyzstan to Russia suggests a shift in the migration patterns of Kyrgyz nationals, with more individuals exploring opportunities in other countries while efforts are being made to create job opportunities within Kyrgyzstan.
