Kyrgyzstan Officials Disregard World Press Freedom Day

Kyrgyzstan is facing increasing pressure on freedom of speech and the press, according to Makhinur Niyazova, editor-in-chief at 24.kg news agency. On World Press Freedom Day, a round table was held to discuss the issue, but none of the representatives from the presidential administration, pro-government parliamentary factions or officials of the Cabinet of Ministers attended. Niyazova stated that the society is concerned about attempts by the authorities to silence unwanted media, and that censorship is being introduced in the country through a law on protecting against inaccurate information. She called for the authorities to accept criticism and to continue fighting for freedom of speech, despite unprecedented pressure.
