Kyrgyzstan: Over 3,800 Families at Risk from Mudflows and Landslides

Hazardous Living Conditions for Over 3,800 Families in Kyrgyzstan
Bishkek – 28 April 2025
More than 3,800 families in Kyrgyzstan are currently residing in areas prone to hazardous natural processes, as highlighted by Daurbek Sakyev, Director of the Department for Monitoring and Forecasting Emergency Situations at the Ministry of Emergency Situations. This alarming statistic was reported by the 24.kg news agency.
According to Sakyev, the ministry has officially issued resettlement notifications to 3,870 families, with over 2,000 of these households located in zones identified as having a high risk of landslides. The situation raises significant concerns about the safety and well-being of these communities.
Sakyev also pointed out that the ministry lacks the authority to enforce mandatory resettlement. "According to established procedures, information and notices are transmitted to local government authorities, which then relay the materials to judicial bodies for consideration regarding resettlement. This process is gradual and requires time, as relocating all families at once is not feasible," he explained.
The need for a more robust resettlement framework is critical, given the potential dangers that these families face. Continued monitoring and a coordinated government response are essential to ensure the safety of those living in hazardous areas.
