Kyrgyzstan to Build 64 Water Reservoirs to Optimize Irrigation Water Use
The Minister of Agriculture, Askarbek Dzhanybekov, has announced plans to build 64 water reservoirs, daily and ten-day regulation pools in Kyrgyzstan. These measures are being taken as part of efforts to adapt to climate change and optimize the use of irrigation water.
Dzhanybekov stated that the Ministry of Agriculture has already taken steps to reduce water losses by 10 percent and increase the volume of supplied moisture by 20 percent. This was achieved through the utilization of 1 billion soms allocated from the budget.
In addition to these measures, water-saving technologies such as drip irrigation and sprinkling irrigation are being actively introduced to further reduce losses. To support this initiative, the government has allocated over 250 million soms in 2022 for farmers to purchase equipment for drip irrigation. As a result, the area under drip irrigation has doubled in just one year.
The minister also highlighted the importance of water storage structures such as reservoirs and regulation pools to collect water from sources and supply it to farmers. In total, 64 such structures are being planned, with construction already underway on some of them.
Furthermore, efforts are being made to reduce water losses during transportation. Mechanized cleaning and concreting of canals are being carried out, with a goal to complete the mechanized cleaning of all canals by the end of 2025.
Overall, these measures represent a comprehensive approach to water management in Kyrgyzstan, aiming to enhance water efficiency and adapt to changing climate conditions.
