Kyrgyzstan Journalists Detained for Extortion
In a shocking turn of events, a journalist and cameraman from a TV channel in Kyrgyzstan have been detained for extortion. The State Committee for National Security (SCNS) reported that the media workers had been involved in a sustainable scheme to extort money from individuals.
According to the SCNS, the journalists participated in raids with the Department of the Patrol Police Service, where they recorded traffic violations. Subsequently, they would blackmail the drivers with video materials filmed during the raids. To legitimize their actions, the journalists forced the drivers to write promissory notes and even took their cars as pledges.
On July 9, the journalist and cameraman were caught red-handed while taking $2,000 from a victim and were placed in a temporary detention center of the SCNS. The authorities are currently conducting an investigation to identify any officials who may have been involved in these illegal activities.
The SCNS has issued a reminder about the importance of adhering to the country’s legislation and emphasized that creating illegal extortion schemes using professional activities is unacceptable. They have urged citizens who have been victims of such extortion to come forward and report the incidents by calling the following number: 0312620585.
This incident serves as a stark reminder of the consequences faced by those who choose to engage in illegal activities, even within the media industry. It is essential for all individuals, regardless of their profession, to uphold the law and conduct themselves with integrity.
