Kyrgyzstani arrested for abandoning newborn in St. Petersburg

A 34-year-old woman from Kyrgyzstan has been taken into custody in Russia after leaving her newborn baby on the street of St. Petersburg. She is facing charges of child endangerment under Article 125 of the Criminal Code of the Russian Federation, as reported by the joint press service of the city courts.

The incident occurred when the woman gave birth to a baby boy around 6:30 p.m. on August 11. A few hours later, she left the maternity hospital without permission. It was later discovered that she left the newborn at the gate of infant orphanage No. 13 near nightfall, placing the baby on the asphalt near the gate.

The investigative bodies stated that the woman knowingly put the newborn in harm’s way, leading to her arrest. The Oktyabrsky District Court has detained the suspect for 30 days until September 10.

It was initially believed that the baby found on the street in Admiralteisky district was abandoned by his mother. However, it was later revealed that the baby’s mother, also a 34-year-old citizen of Kyrgyzstan, had left the child near the orphanage after deciding that he was unwanted. The woman’s sister was involved in the incident, leaving the baby at the gate and then fleeing.

The mother, in her statement to the authorities, mentioned that she and her sister returned to ensure that the baby was taken in by the orphanage. The case highlights the complexities of the situation and the importance of addressing issues relating to unwanted children in society.
