Kyrgyzstan’s Economy at Risk if Foreigners Depart, Warns Labor Minister

On May 18, 2024, Minister of Labor and Social Security of Kyrgyzstan, Gulnara Baatyrova, expressed concern about the potential impact on the economy if foreign migrants were to leave Kyrgyzstan following recent night riots. In an interview with Kabar news agency, she emphasized that the departure of foreign workers could have serious repercussions on the economy of the country.
Baatyrova pointed out that there were individuals present during the riots who sought to provoke conflict and spread false messages inciting interethnic hatred. These instigators are currently being identified by authorities.
The Minister highlighted the importance of foreign labor in Kyrgyzstan, noting that there is already a shortage of labor force in the country. If foreigners were to be expelled, it could negatively affect small businesses, large enterprises, and private entrepreneurs who contribute taxes to the state. Baatyrova warned that entire industries could potentially come to a halt, causing significant damage to the economy.
The spontaneous protest against foreigners in Bishkek that took place the previous night concluded in the morning of May 18, after the police reached an agreement with the protesters. Chui Avenue was reopened and the protesters dispersed. However, the Ministry of Health reported that 29 individuals were injured during the protests. Additionally, the police detained four foreigners, including three citizens of Egypt.
The events of the night riots have raised concerns about the delicate balance of foreign labor in Kyrgyzstan and the potential implications of their departure on the country’s economy. Authorities are working to address the underlying issues and prevent further unrest.
