Kyrgyzstan’s External Debt Surpasses $4.6 Billion

Public debt in Kyrgyzstan reached $6,270.5 billion in January 2024, according to data released by the Ministry of Finance. This total includes both external and internal debt, with $4,627.07 billion being external debt and $1,643.44 billion being internal debt.

The public debt at the end of January 2024 amounted to 44.5 percent of the updated forecast GDP. More than half of the external debt consists of multilateral loans, totaling $2,480.63 billion. The country also owes $2,079.5 billion in bilateral concessional loans, accounting for 44.9 percent of the external debt.

A significant portion of the Kyrgyz Republic’s external debt, at least 36.9 percent, is owed to the Export-Import Bank of China, amounting to $1,707.71 billion as of the end of January 2024. These figures highlight the country’s ongoing financial challenges and the need to carefully manage its debt obligations.
