Kyrgyzstan’s Gymnasiums and Lyceums at Risk of Losing Status

Kyrgyzstan to Develop Independent System for Evaluating Schools-Gymnasiums and Lyceums
Bishkek, 12 January 2024 – The Ministry of Education and Science of Kyrgyzstan has announced plans to develop criteria and an independent system for evaluating the work of schools-gymnasiums and lyceums. According to the ministry, in cases of non-compliance with requirements and low levels of student performance, these organizations will be transformed into regular schools.
The focus is on improving the quality of education in gymnasiums and lyceums, as teachers receive salary supplements of 15 and 20 percent, respectively, for the status of the school and the work of additional clubs. The ministry pointed out that at least 1.013 billion soms are allocated annually from the republican budget for additional payments to teachers, while there are schools with a low level of quality of education.
The Ministry of Education and Science also reminded that the accreditation of schools has been canceled. Therefore, in order to improve the quality of educational services provided, an independent assessment system is necessary.
The move comes as part of ongoing efforts to enhance the quality of education in Kyrgyzstan and ensure that schools provide high-quality educational services to students. The development of criteria and an independent evaluation system for schools-gymnasiums and lyceums is expected to help raise standards and ensure that students receive the best possible education.
