Kyrgyzstan’s MFA Expresses Concern Over Airstrike on UAE Residence in Sudan
On October 2, 2024, the Ministry of Foreign Affairs of the Kyrgyz Republic expressed its concern over reports of an airstrike on the residence of the head of the diplomatic mission of the United Arab Emirates in the territory of the Republic of Sudan in the city of Khartoum.
According to the Foreign Ministry of the United Arab Emirates, a Sudanese Air Force plane struck the residence of the head of the diplomatic mission in Khartoum, causing serious damage to the building. The UAE Foreign Ministry denounced the incident as a violation of the principle of inviolability of diplomatic facilities and stated its intention to send an official letter to the League of Arab States, the African Union, and the UN.
The situation in Sudan has been tense since April 2023 as a result of disagreements between the head of state and the transitional sovereign council Abdel Fattah al-Burhan and the leader of the Rapid Response Force. Clashes between the parties led to thousands of casualties, and despite attempts to reach a ceasefire agreement, the conflict persists. Recently, on September 26, 2024, the Sudanese army launched an offensive on Khartoum, using artillery and air strikes to regain control of the capital.
The Kyrgyz Republic has emphasized the importance of ensuring the security of diplomatic missions in accordance with the Vienna Convention of 1961 and called for adherence to international law. The Foreign Ministry of Kyrgyzstan urges all parties involved to respect recognized principles and norms of international law.
The incident in Khartoum serves as a reminder of the fragility of diplomatic relations and the need for all nations to uphold the sanctity of diplomatic missions.
