Kyrgyzstan’s Opposition Leader May Face Prosecution, As Requested by Prosecutor-General’s Office

European Union officials met with Kosovar Prime Minister Albin Kurti in Bratislava on May 31 to discuss the ethnic-Serb crisis in Kosovo. EU foreign policy chief Josep Borrell tweeted that the situation in the country was “dangerous and unsustainable” and emphasized the need for urgent de-escalation to find a solution to the crisis. Ethnic-Serb demonstrators have been protesting against the forced entry of ethnic Albanian mayors into municipal buildings in northern Kosovo, which triggered a standoff with Kosovar police and KFOR troops. The largest Kosovar Serbian party has demanded the removal of the mayors and the withdrawal of special police units from the north. The US has proposed allowing the mayors to work from locations other than the municipal buildings. However, Kurti has rejected this proposal as it would be seen as proof of a parallel structure being created within Kosovo. NATO has plans to deploy 700 more troops to Kosovo, and the leaders of France and Germany have announced plans to meet with top Serbia and Kosovo officials on June 1.
