Kyrgyzstan’s Parliament Passes Draft Law on People’s Kurultai
New Law on People’s Kurultai Passed in Kyrgyzstan Parliament
Bishkek – In a meeting held by the Parliament of Kyrgyzstan, a draft law on the People’s Kurultai was approved in the third reading. The legislation received the support of 69 deputies, while two voted against it.
The initial draft law on the People’s Kurultai, which was proposed by the presidential administration, faced opposition from the Committee on Constitutional Legislation, State Structure, Judicial and Legal Issues in May 2022. However, officials revisited the document for further discussion in March 2023. After deliberations, the Parliament removed the bill from the agenda and formed a working group. On May 10, the Parliament passed the working group’s version of the draft law in the first reading.
However, the delegates of the kurultai expressed dissatisfaction with the working group’s version of the law. They demanded that deputies adopt the original document prepared by the administration of the head of state without making any changes to it.
The People’s Kurultai holds significant importance in Kyrgyzstan’s political structure as a representative assembly. The new law aims to address any legal shortcomings and improve the functioning of the kurultai, giving more power to the voice of the people.
The passage of this law is seen as a positive development in Kyrgyzstan’s political landscape as it allows for effective governance and ensures that the rights and interests of the citizens are well-represented. The People’s Kurultai serves as a platform for open and constructive dialogue, enabling the government to make informed decisions and policies based on the needs and aspirations of its people.
This new law on the People’s Kurultai marks a significant step forward in Kyrgyzstan’s democratic process, promoting transparency and accountability within the country’s governance system. With the completion of the legislative process, it is expected that the law will come into effect soon, empowering the citizens and strengthening democratic principles in the nation.
