Kyrgyzstan’s Parliament Speaker Announces Anthem Rewrite
On October 25, 2024, the Speaker of the Parliament of Kyrgyzstan, Nurlanbek Shakiev, made an announcement at an event commemorating the 100th anniversary of the Kara-Kyrgyz Autonomous Region and the 140th anniversary of statesman Imanaly Aidarbekov. He declared that he would be working on rewriting the national anthem of Kyrgyzstan.
According to Shakiev, the current anthem was adopted when Kyrgyzstan had just gained independence from the Soviet Union. However, now the country has made significant progress and is on a path of development. Therefore, he believes that it is time to change the anthem to better reflect the current state of the nation.
The national anthem of the Kyrgyz Republic was originally approved on December 18, 1992, by a resolution of the Supreme Council of the Kyrgyz Republic. It initially consisted of three verses and a refrain, but the second verse was removed by a resolution of the Parliament on December 27, 2012.
Shakiev emphasized that the new anthem should be one that resonates with all citizens and is sung with pride. As the country continues to grow and evolve, it is important that its national symbols, including the anthem, reflect this progress. The process of rewriting the anthem is expected to be a significant undertaking, but one that Shakiev believes is necessary for Kyrgyzstan’s future.
