Kyrgyzstan’s Solar Station Project to Shine at Vienna Forum

The Ministry of Economy and Commerce in Kyrgyzstan is making strides in promoting the pilot PPP project Kyrgyz Solar Station, with a capacity of 150 megawatts, for presentation at the Energy Investment Forum in Vienna. According to reports from the Ministry’s press service, Deputy Minister Sanzhar Bolotov recently met with representatives from the International Finance Corporation (IFC) to discuss the project.

Deputy Minister Bolotov expressed gratitude to the IFC team for their support in developing and promoting the project, recognizing the importance of IFC’s role as a transaction consultant. The corporation is assisting in the project by helping to develop a feasibility study, structuring the project, and conducting environmental and other preparatory work to attract internationally recognized investors to Kyrgyzstan.

The project includes plans for a transparent and competitive tender process to select a qualified private partner and reduce the tariff for the purchase of electricity by the state. The first stage of the competitive selection process is nearing completion, with preparations underway for the project’s presentation at the Energy Investment Forum scheduled by the Cabinet of Ministers in June 2024 in Vienna.

IFC has reported that several large foreign companies from Europe, the Middle East, and China have already shown interest in participating in the competition. The solar station project is set to be implemented in Naryn, Talas, and Batken regions, aiming to diversify the country’s fuel and energy balance and increase the use of renewable energy potential to meet growing domestic and regional demand.
