Climate Change Impacting Kyrgyz Republic: New Environmental Atlas
The Kyrgyz Republic is experiencing the effects of climate change at a rate twice the global average, leading to increased temperatures, water stress, and heightened risks of natural disasters. The United Nations Environment Programme (UNEP) recently launched a new Atlas of Environmental Change that highlights these alarming trends.
According to the UNEP, the average annual temperature in the Kyrgyz Republic has risen by 1.2°C between 1960 and 2023, surpassing the global average increase of 0.6°C. This trend is expected to accelerate in the coming years, posing significant challenges for the country’s water resources.
Climate change is projected to decrease rainfall, alter snow patterns, and lead to glacial retreat, resulting in reduced water inflow to key reservoirs like the Toktogul reservoir. This could have implications for hydropower generation and electricity supply in the future.
Despite these challenges, the UNEP also acknowledges the Kyrgyz Republic’s efforts in environmental conservation. The country has seen an increase in forest cover from 6.2 percent to 6.9 percent since 2000, mainly due to afforestation initiatives. Additionally, the area of protected lands has expanded from 0.5 million hectares in 2000 to 1.5 million hectares by 2023, with plans to cover 10 percent of the country by 2040.
The Atlas of Environmental Change, based on data spanning six decades from various sources, sheds light on the evolving environmental landscape in the Kyrgyz Republic. As the country continues to grapple with the impacts of climate change, these findings serve as a valuable resource for policymakers, researchers, and conservationists striving to mitigate its effects and safeguard the nation’s natural heritage.
