Kyrgyzstan’s Trade with Europe Plummets in 2025

Kyrgyzstan’s Trade with Europe Sees Significant Decline in Early 2025
Bishkek, May 6, 2025 — Kyrgyzstan’s trade turnover with European countries has experienced a dramatic drop of 65 percent in the first two months of 2025, according to recent data from the National Statistical Committee. This decline raises concerns about the economic impact and future trade relationships.
Between January and February 2025, Kyrgyzstan’s trade turnover totaled $142 million, a substantial decrease from $234 million during the same period in 2024. The report highlights a stark contrast, particularly in exports and imports from Europe.
Exports from Kyrgyzstan to European nations fell by 50 percent, amounting to approximately $37.8 million. Meanwhile, imports from Europe plunged by an even steeper 65.6 percent, totaling $104.2 million. These figures signify a troubling trend amidst what was once a period of burgeoning trade growth.
Previously, it was reported that trade turnover between Kyrgyzstan and EU countries had increased by 2.4 times over the past three years, showcasing a strong trajectory of growth. During this time, imports rose 2.6 times, while exports grew by 1.5 times. President Sadyr Japarov attributed this progress to the successful implementation of the Generalised System of Preferences, which has facilitated trade benefits for Kyrgyzstan.
In a recent meeting with Ursula von der Leyen, President of the European Commission, Japarov expressed gratitude to European partners for their support, underscoring the importance of continued collaboration in future trade initiatives.
As Kyrgyzstan navigates these challenges, stakeholders will be watching closely to see how the country adapts to shifts in its trade dynamics with Europe and what measures will be taken to restore growth in this vital economic sector.
