Mansur Yavaş Promotes Transparency in Politics by Disclosing Assets
Mansur Yavaş, the mayor of Ankara Metropolitan Municipality, recently made a statement to journalists in which he emphasized the importance of transparency in politics. Yavaş stated that he has declared his assets before the local elections in 2009, 2014, and 2019 and highlighted the need for politicians to be open about their financial status.
“When I took office in 2019, I explained the difference between now and then so that people can see the difference. Politics should no longer be a tool for people to get rich,” said Yavaş.
He also addressed the increasing income gap in Turkey, attributing it to corruption. Yavaş emphasized the importance of social support and stressed the need for transparency in disclosing financial statements and assets.
Yavaş went on to say, “I clearly disclosed my income and expenses. I expect my competitors to also explain, but if they do not, it is their own discretion. I will always continue to be transparent.”
In addition to disclosing his own assets, Yavaş called for transparency in all tenders, emphasizing the need for live broadcasts of such processes. He also expressed his desire for the release of financial statements from the Court of Accounts, including those from companies, to give citizens a better understanding of where their taxes and money are being utilized.
Yavaş then revealed the details of his and his wife Nursen Yavaş’s assets, which he shared on his social media account. He provided a detailed list of their assets from 2019 and 2024, as well as their current debts.
The move by Yavaş to disclose his assets is seen as a step towards promoting transparency and accountability in politics, as well as encouraging his opponents to follow suit. By setting an example of openness regarding his financial status, Yavaş hopes to build public trust in politicians and pave the way for greater transparency in political practices throughout Turkey.
