Canadian Judge Sentences Veltman to Life in Prison for Anti-Muslim Attack
In a recent decision announced by Judge Renee Pomerance in Canada, 22-year-old Nathaniel Veltman has been sentenced to life in prison for the murder and attempted murder of a Muslim family in 2021. The judge described Veltman’s actions as “terrorism” and emphasized that there is no place for hatred and racism in Canadian society.
The tragic incident took place on June 6, 2021, in London, Ontario, when Veltman intentionally drove his truck into a Muslim family of five who were out for a walk on the sidewalk. The attack resulted in the deaths of 74-year-old grandmother Talat Afzaal, her 46-year-old son Salman Afzaal, his 44-year-old wife Madiha Salman, and their 15-year-old daughter Yumna Salman. The family’s 9-year-old son, Fayez Salman, was also seriously injured in the attack.
Veltman was detained by police 6 kilometers from the scene of the attack. The incident was quickly condemned by Canadian Prime Minister Justin Trudeau, who referred to it as a “terrorist attack motivated by hatred.” The attack caused fear and destruction in the region, and Judge Pomerance emphasized that Veltman targeted and killed the family because they were Muslim.
Veltman was convicted of first-degree murder and attempted murder in November 2023, and the recent sentencing has brought a sense of closure to the affected community. The tragedy has sparked conversations about the importance of combatting hatred and xenophobia in Canada, as the country strives to create a society free of discrimination and violence.
