Ece Gürel, a 36-year-old architect, was tragically lost after going missing during a hike in the Belgrade Forest in Istanbul. Gürel had left his home in Kağıthane Gültepe Neighborhood on Sunday, March 2, and was reported missing by his relatives. A large-scale search and rescue operation was launched, involving numerous teams to locate him.
After four days of searching, Gürel’s mobile phone and personal belongings were discovered in the forest on March 4. Tragically, Gürel was found in critical condition in the Sarp forested area and was rushed to Maslak Acıbadem Hospital’s intensive care unit. Despite all efforts to save him, Gürel succumbed to his injuries and passed away.
His funeral arrangements were made, and the Forensic Medicine Institute completed the necessary autopsy procedures before delivering Gürel’s body to his family. The funeral service took place at Güneşli Central Mosque in Bağcılar, where he was laid to rest after the afternoon prayer.
Health Minister Kemal Memişoğlu later confirmed that Gürel’s cause of death was extreme hypothermia, a tragic end to the life of a woman described as “full of life” by her grieving relatives. The sudden loss of Gürel has deeply affected not only her family but the entire country, especially coming just before International Women’s Day.
