Latest Update on Uzbekistan’s Progress towards WTO Accession

Uzbekistan Makes Significant Strides Towards WTO Membership in 2024

The President’s aide, Saida Mirziyoyeva, highlighted the significant progress that Uzbekistan has made in 2024 towards joining the World Trade Organization (WTO). She listed key achievements and emphasized that the work will continue at the same pace this year to secure full membership in the organization.

Mirziyoyeva stated, “We will continue at this pace in the current year to soon become a full member of the organization.”

In 2024, the WTO Working Group held two crucial meetings, allowing Uzbekistan to begin drafting the key document for membership—the Working Group Report. Additionally, bilateral negotiations were successfully concluded with 15 countries, including major economies such as the United States, China, and Japan. As a result, Uzbekistan has signed 23 agreements to further its trade relations.

Furthermore, Uzbekistan enacted 20 important laws in a short period to improve business transparency and competition.

Mirziyoyeva emphasized the importance of continuing this momentum throughout the year to secure full membership in the WTO. This move is expected to enhance the country’s investment appeal and help Uzbek businesses integrate into regional and global value chains.

The ultimate goal of both WTO membership and the ongoing reforms led by the president is to ensure the prosperity of the Uzbek people, create quality jobs, and transition the economy to a more efficient governance model, as stated by Mirziyoyeva on her Telegram channel.

It is also worth noting that Uzbekistan met one of the requirements for WTO membership on January 1 by suspending transport cost compensation for exporters and abolishing tax exemptions on income and turnover taxes.

Overall, Uzbekistan’s progress towards WTO membership in 2024 has been commendable, and the commitment to furthering these efforts in 2025 signifies a positive step towards greater international trade integration and economic development for the country.
