Lawmakers in Turkmenistan Orient attend gender approach seminar

The event, organized by the United Nations Population Fund (UNFPA) and the Asian Forum of Parliamentarians on Population and Development (AFPPD), saw the participation of representatives from the Mejlis of Turkmenistan.

The seminar brought together members of parliamentary committees, the Executive Director of AFPPD Farrukh Usmonov, UNFPA experts, and online participants such as Gabriela Alvarez Minte and Fabio Piana. Discussions revolved around the prevalence and consequences of domestic violence, international legislative practices, and the importance of incorporating such norms into Turkmenistan’s legal framework.

In addition, a consultation meeting was held with the Interdepartmental Commission for Ensuring the Fulfillment of International Commitments of Turkmenistan in the Field of Human Rights and International Humanitarian Law. Various ministries and departments reviewed foreign experiences in protecting women from gender-based violence.

These events were part of the technical assistance to implement the Roadmap for the recommendations of the National Sample Survey on the Health and Status of Women in the Family and the Concluding Recommendations of the Committee on the Elimination of Discrimination against Women. UNFPA expressed its commitment to further collaboration with the Turkmenistan government and parliament in this crucial area.
