Lebanon’s Parliament Debates Last Minute News from Turkey
President Recep Tayyip Erdoğan submitted a memorandum to the Turkish Grand National Assembly regarding the extension of the duty period of Turkish soldiers in Lebanon under the United Nations Interim Task Force (UNIFIL) for another year.
The memorandum, based on the decision numbered 1701 by the United Nations Security Council (UNSC) and the permission granted by the Turkish Grand National Assembly in 2006, highlighted Turkey’s continued commitment to working in Lebanon. The Turkish Armed Forces (TSK) have been actively contributing to UNIFIL, with the latest extension of the permit set to start from October 31, 2023.
Turkey plays a crucial role in maintaining peace and stability in the region through its contributions to UNIFIL, as stated in the memorandum. The ongoing civil-military cooperation activities and Turkey’s visibility on a global scale have been instrumental in furthering its policy towards peacekeeping efforts.
With UNIFIL’s mandate extended until August 31, 2025, the memorandum emphasized the importance of Turkey’s continued participation in UNIFIL. The President requested the participation of Turkish Armed Forces elements in UNIFIL for another year, starting from October 31, 2024, in accordance with the decisions of the UNSC and the Turkish Grand National Assembly.
The memorandum underscores Turkey’s commitment to supporting UNIFIL’s mission and contributing to peace and stability in the region, as well as strengthening its bilateral relations with Lebanon. The President will determine the borders, scope, and amount of Turkish Armed Forces elements participating in UNIFIL, with necessary arrangements to be made accordingly.
