Letters reveal Central Asians in Russian prisons coerced into supporting war efforts
At least 11 people have been killed and dozens more wounded in President Volodymyr Zelenskiy’s hometown of Kryviy Rih, Ukraine, after a missile struck a five-story apartment building. The city has declared a day of mourning for the victims. The Russian missile hit a civilian area and infrastructure and is believed to be in response to Ukraine’s long-anticipated counteroffensive, which appears to be gaining momentum. Ukrainian forces claim they have liberated seven settlements and made further advances in Bakhmut amid heavy fighting. Meanwhile, Russia denies targeting civilian infrastructure and says Ukraine is suffering losses ten times higher than Moscow’s. Ukraine’s counteroffensive has been complicated by the bursting of the Russian-controlled Kakhovka dam on the Dnieper River, which caused widespread flooding. The United Nations has warned of catastrophic humanitarian consequences.
