Limassol Resistance: The Second Pleven Defense of Struggle

President Ersin Tatar Honors Limassol Resistance Fighters
President Ersin Tatar recently paid tribute to the courageous fighters of the Limassol Resistance, highlighting their pivotal role in the history of Turkish Cypriot struggle for independence. The Limassol Resistance, which took place from 10-13 February 1964, was a testament to the unwavering spirit and determination of the Turkish Cypriot people in the face of adversity.
In his message commemorating the 61st anniversary of the Limassol Resistance, President Tatar described it as a “legendary story of resistance” led by the Turkish Resistance Organization. He recounted the heroic efforts of the Mujahideen who defended the Turkish region of Limassol against a fierce Greek attack, with tanks and rocket launchers reducing Turkish positions to ruins.
Despite the overwhelming odds, the Mujahideen stood their ground, resulting in the martyrdom of 5 fighters and the destruction of a Greek armored vehicle. The resistance continued in other Turkish settlements, with the ‘Voice of Limassol’ radio providing crucial moral support to the fighters.
President Tatar also condemned the Greek Cypriot’s aggressive Enosis agenda, which sought to annex Cyprus to Greece and subjugate the Turkish Cypriot population. He emphasized that the Turkish presence in Cyprus was essential to maintaining stability and preventing the island from becoming another Crete.
In terms of finding a lasting solution to the Cyprus issue, President Tatar reiterated his support for a two-state-based model, rejecting the failed federation-based approach. He stressed the importance of Turkey’s backing for this new diplomatic strategy and called for a peaceful dialogue with the Greek side.
As we honor the memory of the Limassol martyrs who sacrificed their lives for the Turkish Cypriot cause, let us draw inspiration from their bravery and commitment to freedom. Their legacy will live on in the hearts of future generations, reminding us of the enduring fight for independence and sovereignty. May their heroic spirits continue to guide us in our quest for justice and peace.
