Local Authorities Hold Meeting with Kum-Shagyl Plant Employees

Kum-Shagyl plant to resume work on February 19

The Kum-Shagyl plant, located in the 12th microdistrict of Bishkek and known for producing reinforced concrete products, is set to resume work on February 19. After a temporary suspension due to the lack of electricity and water supply, the enterprise will be back in operation, as reported by 24.kg news agency.

The decision to resume work comes after a rally held by the plant’s workers on February 15 at Maxim Gorky Park in the capital. The employees demanded the return of their jobs, prompting Deputy Mayors of Bishkek Maksatbek Sazykulov and Azamat Kadyrov to visit the enterprise. They assured the workers that efforts would be made to reconnect the plant to essential utilities and review the necessary documents for operation.

The news of the plant’s suspension came after a delegation of city officials, including the mayor of Bishkek and the head of the State Construction Agency, along with a police presence, arrived at the plant on February 9. The officials advised the plant’s management to halt operations, although they did not present any formal documents to support their directive, according to lawyer Lyudmila Sabelnikova.

In response to the situation, Bishkek City Hall commented to 24.kg news agency, stating that all licenses of the company for mining and quarry development were canceled by the decision of the commission on geology.

Frustrated by the turn of events, the workers of the plant sought help from President Sadyr Japarov and head of the security services Kamchybek Tashiev, referring to the unfolding situation as a “raider takeover.”

With the pending resumption of work at the Kum-Shagyl plant, it remains to be seen how the dispute over its operations and the cancellation of its licenses will be resolved.
