Local officials in Sirdarya arrested for corruption
Five district governors in the Sirdarya region have been caught up in corruption-related crimes, as revealed by the Anti-Corruption Agency. The disclosure came during a meeting focused on ongoing anti-corruption initiatives, highlighting the prevalence of such illicit activities among regional officials.
In its report, the agency noted that in 2023, a total of 324 corruption-related crimes were documented in Sirdarya, with an additional 216 cases reported in the first eight months of 2024. The accused individuals include key figures such as district governors, deputy governors, and other personnel from local administrative bodies.
Three district governors, one deputy governor, and 17 administrative staff members were implicated in corruption cases in 2023, according to the agency’s findings. This year, the list expanded to encompass two district governors, three deputy governors, two administrative workers, three individuals from the regional beautification department, and one representative from a public procurement engineering firm.
The Director of the Anti-Corruption Agency, Akmal Burkhanov, joined other regional leaders at the meeting to assess the progress in preventing corruption in Sirdarya. The participants stressed the importance of implementing stricter oversight measures and enacting reforms within local governments to combat the growing trend of criminal behavior by public officials.
Furthermore, the meeting addressed concerns regarding the involvement of some local officials in private business ventures, a practice that raises concerns about potential conflicts of interest and erodes public confidence in the governance of the region. It underscored the pressing need for transparent and accountable leadership to restore trust and integrity in the administration of Sirdarya.
