Denizli Court Requests Aggravated Life Imprisonment for Man Accused of Killing His Wife
The Denizli 5th High Criminal Court has called for aggravated life imprisonment for Ahmet Emre Irmak, who stands accused of the intentional murder of his non-pregnant wife. Irmak also faces charges of intentional wounding with a gun, causing bone fractures to his superiors, and the intentional murder of his wife.
During the second hearing of the case in July, the defendant claimed that he reacted to overhearing voices outside his home. “Believing there would be an argument, I grabbed the knife from the kitchen and placed it in my waist”, Irmak explained.
The defendant further divulged that he seized his wife by the hair and arm, dragging her along for 100 meters. It was at this point that he allegedly heard his mother-in-law’s voice, along with other voices expressing concern for his wife. “They were saying, ‘Where are you taking her? She has someone she loves, I will give her to them’, so I waved the knife at my wife’s stomach and waist, ultimately stabbing her four times,” Irmak confessed.
In light of the circumstances, the court has decided to refer the defendant to the Manisa Mental and Neurological Diseases Hospital for further assessment of his mental condition. According to a preliminary report, Irmak has been hospitalized since September 1 and requires an additional three-week observation period before a comprehensive report can be prepared.
Following the completion of the hospital’s report, the medical board has determined that Irmak, who claimed to hear voices leading up to the murder, possesses “full criminal capacity”. The report stated that there is no direct correlation between the defendant’s mental state and the act committed. The decision regarding Irmak’s culpability will be announced during the upcoming hearing on November 14.
As the court examines the details of this tragic case, it remains to be seen how the accused’s mental health evaluation will impact the final verdict.
