Man with sickle causes trouble on roof for gendarmerie

A man went to the roof with a sickle in his hand in Antalya and gave the gendarmerie a hard time during the demolition of illegally built buildings on treasury land.
The incident took place when 21 illegal buildings were being demolished on island 28254, parcel 459, in the Gaziler District of Kepez district. Following instructions from the prosecutor’s office, a demolition decision was made by the council.
Despite the notification to the building owners, the demolition did not take place within the given time, leading to the demolition of the 21 buildings. Tension escalated during the demolition, with gendarmerie teams taking intense security measures.
One of the neighborhood residents tried to prevent the security forces by climbing onto the roof with a sickle in his hand. Long persuasion efforts were made to bring the person down from the roof. Additionally, a woman intervened in the demolition, causing further tension. Gendarmerie teams worked to calm the woman and remove her from the scene.
Claims were made by citizens that the demolition violated promises made to them. Neighborhood residents protested the situation, expressing their discontent with the demolition.
Kadir Ali Özdemir, a resident of the neighborhood, alleged that the municipality had promised them there would be no demolition during the election period. He expressed his disappointment, stating, “This is where we’ve lived for years. It was built illegally, but we were promised no demolition. Then they destroyed our homes.”
A female resident of the neighborhood shared the devastation caused by the demolition, mentioning the loss of everything they had. She questioned how she would manage to pay rent or take care of her sick child with her pension.
The incident highlights the challenges faced by residents during the demolition of illegally built structures, sparking tensions and discontent within the community.
