Turkish authorities seize 910 water turtles worth 655 million pounds
Turkish customs officials at the Sarp Customs Field made a shocking discovery during a routine inspection. A vehicle entering Turkey was found to be suspicious and was subjected to X-ray screening, which revealed a suspicious density. Upon further investigation, a staggering 910 water turtles were found hidden inside the vehicle, with an estimated market value of 655 million Turkish lira.
The operation was carried out by the Sarp Customs Protection Smuggling and Intelligence Directorate, who conducted detailed searches to uncover the illegal smuggling of the turtles. An investigation has been launched by the authorities, with the case now under the jurisdiction of the Hopa Chief Public Prosecutor’s Office.
The illegal trade of wildlife is a serious offense and poses a threat to the conservation of endangered species. Turkish authorities are committed to combating wildlife smuggling and will continue to enforce strict measures to protect these precious animals.
