Massive Earthquake Damages 18 Schools and 11 Kindergartens in Osh City
On March 12, 2025, an earthquake struck Osh, Kyrgyz Republic, causing damage to several schools and kindergartens in the area. Abdykalyk Akzholov, the chief specialist of the Department of Education in Osh, reported that a total of 18 schools and 11 kindergartens were affected, with cracks appearing in corridors, canteens, and some classrooms.
Photo reports have been compiled to document the damage, and the information has been forwarded to the Ministry of Emergency Situations for further assessment and assistance. Fortunately, no injuries were reported in the affected educational institutions.
In addition to the structural damage in Osh, an internal adobe partition wall collapsed in a residential building in Mady village, Kara-Suu district. Despite the collapse, the house itself remained intact, and residents were unharmed.
The Civil Protection Commission is currently conducting inspections of residential buildings and social facilities in the rural areas of Zhoosh, Datka, and Bash-Bulak to ensure the safety of residents.
The earthquake, which struck at 9:11 a.m., registered a magnitude of 5 in Osh city and the surrounding region. The intensity of the tremors varied, with Osh experiencing about a magnitude 5, and other villages such as Shark, Tashtak, Kyzyl-Kyshtak, Nariman, and Kyrgyz-Chek reporting similar magnitudes. Kara-Suu village was affected by a magnitude 4 earthquake.
Authorities are continuing to assess the situation and provide assistance to those affected by the earthquake in Osh.
