Over 200,000 Uzbek Users’ Personal Data Leaked on the Internet

In a recent cyber incident, the personal data of more than 200,000 Uzbek users has been leaked on the internet. The leaked information includes passwords to various systems and platforms such as the OneID system, the State Testing Center, public and educational organizations, as well as search and payment systems. This poses a significant cyber threat to the affected users, according to experts.
The Cybersecurity Center has highlighted the seriousness of the situation and has issued advice on password protection. They urge users to follow certain precautions to secure their personal data and protect against potential cyberattacks.
It is believed that the leaked passwords are not directly related to the OneID system or its servers. Instead, cybercriminals likely gained access to users’ computers and collected login passwords stored in their browsers. The hackers then compiled this information into a single file and leaked it on the internet.
The Ministry of Digital Technologies has reassured users that no cyberattack on the OneID system was detected and there were no malfunctions in the system. They suspect that the problem is due to a virus infection on users’ devices and are taking measures to address it.
The Ministry has also emphasized the importance of protecting personal data and urged citizens to be cautious about their online activities. They recommend safeguarding computers and mobile communication devices from viruses.
The Cyber Security Center of Uzbekistan has confirmed that over 200,000 users have been impacted by the cyberattack. It is essential for affected individuals to take immediate action to protect their confidential information.
Experts have identified several potential reasons behind this data breach, including weak password policies, the use of unlicensed or outdated software, damaged devices with malicious programs, internal (insider) information, and social engineering techniques like phishing or vishing.
To mitigate the risks, the Cyber Security Center has launched a bot in Telegram (@CSEC_Login_Bot) to help users check if their login passwords have been leaked. They also provide recommendations to enhance personal cybersecurity, such as setting strong passwords, using two-step verification, using licensed software and regularly updating it, avoiding suspicious web links and unknown software, and being cautious while entering login credentials on web pages.
It is crucial for Uzbek users to prioritize the security of their personal data and follow the advice provided by cybersecurity experts. By taking appropriate measures, individuals can minimize the potential impact of such cyber incidents and ensure the safety of their online presence.
