Reviving the Tradition: The Story of Matyodesign
Even if you have never been to Matyóföld, you have probably heard of one of Hungary’s most famous cultural treasures, the matyó embroidery. This traditional craft, however, is facing the risk of fading away as fewer people are able to uphold this age-old tradition. Yet, there is always an exception, and one person is determined to keep the art alive.
Rozi Váczi, a passionate embroiderer, is one of the last individuals making a living out of matyó embroidery. She not only dreamed of revitalizing this unique craft but also established her own brand, Matyodesign, based on it. Thanks to her efforts, the splendid hand-made items of matyó embroidery design are now easily accessible to people near and far.
But how did Rozi’s journey begin? Growing up in Tard, one of the three matyó villages in the Hungarian countryside, Rozi was surrounded by these special embroideries. However, it was only when she lost touch with her roots that she truly understood their value. After giving birth to her first child, Rozi experienced depression and was sent back to Tard in the hopes of finding solace. It was during this time that she had the idea to ask her old nanny to create an embroidery for her husband’s t-shirt. This moment, filled with nostalgia and inspiration, marked the birth of the matyó embroidery design concept.
Today, Tard has become the center of the Matyodesign project, where forty-five embroidery specialists create breathtaking pieces. What sets Matyodesign apart is the fusion of traditional embroideries with modern and stylish items such as dresses, coats, jeans, handbags, and backpacks. Each piece is extraordinary, catering to those who value tradition and are willing to invest in quality and uniqueness.
While the patterns of matyó embroidery are predetermined due to their heritage, each piece remains unique. The usage of seven specific colors, such as the iconic red matyó rose with a touch of blue and a yellow dot in the center, distinguishes these embroideries. Moreover, the durability of Matyodesign products ensures that they remain intact for decades, making them timeless additions to the wearer’s style.

These tours offer a glimpse into the everyday lives of embroidery professionals and provide a retreat from the fast-paced city life. Starting September, guests also have the opportunity to stay at the newly opened guesthouse in Tard, allowing them to fully experience the charm of the village.
