Car-Free Day in Ulaanbaatar: A Step Towards Preventing Traffic Accidents

May 25 marks the annual celebration of car-free day in Ulaanbaatar, joining 46 countries around the world in an effort to reduce traffic accidents and promote people giving up their cars. According to statistics, traffic accidents account for 11.1 percent of all deaths caused by accidents and external factors.

In the year 2023, there were a total of 525 injuries and 57 deaths recorded in Ulaanbaatar due to traffic accidents. Furthermore, 266 people were injured in scooter accidents in 2023, with an additional 56 cases reported in 2024.

During the car-free day event held on June 3, 2023, a total of 142 calls and reports regarding traffic accidents were registered. Among the incidents, 12 children aged between 2 and 14 were injured after being hit by bicycles, while six children were hit by electric motor bikes. In response, the use of electric scooters and bicycles was prohibited during the car-free day in September 2023. Authorities have also pledged to monitor and prevent accidents involving electric motor bikes this year.

The initiative to observe car-free day in Ulaanbaatar serves as a crucial step towards reducing the number of traffic accidents and ensuring the safety of pedestrians, especially children. By encouraging individuals to opt for alternative modes of transportation, such as walking or using public transport, we can create a safer and more sustainable environment for all. Let’s work together to make our streets safer for everyone.
