Mayor Sarıyıldız and 5 Council Members of Akdeniz Municipality Arrested
Several government officials and council members from Akdeniz Municipality in Mersin, Turkey have been detained as part of an investigation into alleged crimes related to terrorism and violating laws on financing terrorism and public demonstrations.
The Mersin Chief Public Prosecutor’s Office coordinated with the Provincial Police Department to target individuals suspected of committing offenses such as “making propaganda for a terrorist organization”, “being a member of an armed terrorist organization”, “violating the Law on the Prevention of Financing of Terrorism”, and “opposing the Law No. 2911 on Meetings and Demonstrations”.
Among those detained are Akdeniz Mayor Hoşyar Sarıyıldız, Deputy Mayor and Council Member Nuriye Arslan, as well as council members from the Democratic Regions Party (DEM Party) Özgür Çağlar, Neslihan Oruç, Yakup Danış, and Hikmet Bakırhan.
Police teams conducted searches at Akdeniz Municipality and implemented security measures in and around the building as part of the ongoing investigation. The detained individuals are now under scrutiny as authorities work to uncover more information regarding the alleged criminal activities.
