Meeting with UN OHCHR Regional Representative for Central Asia
A meeting was held between Deputy Minister of Foreign Affairs of Turkmenistan Akhmet Gurbanov and the Regional Representative of the Office of the United Nations High Commissioner for Human Rights for Central Asia (OHCHR) Matilda Bogner on September 4, 2024.
During the meeting, the two parties discussed ways to further strengthen cooperation between Turkmenistan and the UN OHCHR. It was highlighted that Turkmenistan is actively working to enhance democratic institutions and fulfill its human rights obligations through partnerships with international organizations.
The meeting also focused on the activities of the Interdepartmental Commission for Ensuring the Fulfilment of Turkmenistan’s International Obligations in the Field of Human Rights and International Humanitarian Law.
Furthermore, discussions revolved around the implementation of various national action plans such as the “National Action Plan on Human Rights in Turkmenistan for 2021-2025”, “National Action Plan on Gender Equality in Turkmenistan for 2021-2025”, and “National Action Plan for the Implementation of Children’s Rights in Turkmenistan for 2023-2028”.
The participants also reviewed the outcomes of dialogues within the Committee on the Elimination of Discrimination against Women and the Committee on the Rights of the Child. They expressed their commitment to working together to implement the recommendations made during these dialogues.
Both sides expressed interest in expanding cooperation with the UN in the area of “Human Rights Education”.
Overall, the meeting highlighted the ongoing efforts of Turkmenistan in promoting and protecting human rights, as well as its commitment to working closely with international partners like the UN OHCHR to achieve these goals.
