Foreign Minister Fidan Takes Part in Meeting on Palestine
Turkey’s Foreign Minister, Fidan, recently attended a meeting on Palestine, joined by representatives from Spain, Slovenia, Norway, Ireland, the European Union, members of the Organization of Islamic Cooperation (OIC), and the Arab League Contact Group.
The Ministry of Foreign Affairs released a statement indicating that discussions centered on halting the ongoing genocide in Gaza and addressing the atrocities committed in the West Bank by Israel. Additionally, talks revolved around ongoing ceasefire negotiations in Gaza, humanitarian efforts, and the importance of recognizing Palestine and striving towards a two-state solution.
At the conclusion of the meeting, a joint declaration urging the international community to promptly recognize Palestine and support a two-state solution was adopted. Concerns about the escalating breaches of international law in Gaza and the need to cease attacks on Palestinians in the West Bank were highlighted.
The declaration also emphasized the critical importance of delivering urgent and uninterrupted humanitarian aid to Gaza and showed backing for the efforts of the UN Relief and Works Agency for Palestine Refugees in the Near East (UNRWA). A decision was made to convene a follow-up meeting in New York during the upcoming UN General Assembly High Level Week in September.
During the discussions, Minister Fidan emphasized the necessity of collective action to secure full UN membership for the State of Palestine and garner recognition from more countries. He stressed the significance of exerting pressure on nations opposing these measures.
Moreover, Minister Fidan called for increased international involvement in the genocide case against Israel at the International Court of Justice.
Turkey remains committed to facilitating an immediate and lasting ceasefire in Palestine, ensuring the unhindered delivery of humanitarian aid to Gaza, advocating for the recognition of Palestine, and advancing towards a two-state solution.
Efforts are underway to uphold human rights and promote peace in the region amidst ongoing conflicts and humanitarian crises.
