Minister of Foreign Affairs Hakan Fidan to Attend Syria Meeting in Riyadh
Minister of Foreign Affairs Hakan Fidan is scheduled to participate in a meeting on Syria in Riyadh on January 12. This meeting comes following the recent change in administration in Syria, with the first gathering taking place in Jordan on December 14, 2024.
Alongside Turkey and Syria, several other countries will be represented at the meeting. Gulf Arab countries cooperation council members, including Saudi Arabia, United Arab Emirates, Qatar, Kuwait, Bahrain, and Oman, will be present at the ministerial level. Additionally, Foreign Ministers from Iraq, Lebanon, Jordan, Egypt, the United Kingdom, and Germany, as well as Deputy Foreign Ministers from the USA and Italy, are expected to attend. Representatives from the European Union, Arab League, and the UN Special Representative for Syria will also be in attendance.
Minister Fidan is expected to deliver key messages at the meeting under 5 main points. He will stress the importance of engaging with the new administration in Syria for the sake of stability in the country, emphasizing the need to uphold the principle of territorial integrity and unity. Fidan will also reaffirm Turkey’s commitment to combatting separatist terrorist organizations operating in the region.
Furthermore, he will highlight the necessity of taking systematic steps towards the reconstruction of Syria and advocate for the easing of sanctions on the country to support critical sectors.
The meeting in Riyadh aims to promote stability and security in Syria amidst the ongoing challenges in the region. Minister Fidan’s participation and messages are crucial in this effort to address the complex dynamics in Syria.
