Tragic Legacy of Violence: The Case of Selçuk Tengioğlu
In a shocking turn of events, Selçuk Tengioğlu, a 66-year-old man, made headlines when he attacked CHP (Republican People’s Party) leader Özgür Özel in Istanbul. On May 10, 2004, Selçuk Tengioğlu shot and killed two of his children, 19-year-old Barış and 17-year-old Mutlu, with a pistol. Neighbors, alerted by the noise, contacted the police, who apprehended Tengioğlu.
During interrogation, Tengioğlu reportedly stated, “My wife left the house; I killed my children,” indicating a tumultuous family dynamics marked by domestic violence. His history of abusive behavior had led to multiple arrests for offenses including domestic violence and drug-related charges. Despite his tragic past, he was released from prison in 2020 due to earlier legal provisions, which has raised concerns in recent discussions surrounding his actions.
