Ministry of Agriculture Implements Temporary Fertilizer Export Ban

Ministry of Agriculture in Kyrgyzstan Imposes Temporary Ban on Fertilizer Exports

The Ministry of Water Resources, Agriculture, and Processing Industry in Kyrgyzstan is taking action to temporarily ban the export of fertilizers outside the Eurasian Economic Union (EAEU). A draft resolution from the Cabinet of Ministers has been put forward for public discussion.

Highlighting the importance of sustainable development in agriculture amidst current economic and environmental challenges, the ministry states that ensuring the productivity and quality of agricultural products is a key priority in state policy.

Mineral fertilizers are crucial for maintaining and increasing agricultural productivity, leading to higher yields and improved product quality. With soil fertility being a key factor in crop yield, the introduction of optimal mineral fertilizer norms is essential.

The annual demand for mineral fertilizers in Kyrgyzstan is 286,700 tons, but the country relies on imports as it lacks its own production facilities. Currently, only 45-55 percent of the total demand is being met through supplies mainly from Uzbekistan under a long-term cooperation agreement.

To ensure timely provision of mineral fertilizers for agriculture, a strategic reserve of 45,000-50,000 tons is necessary during the sowing season. However, challenges have arisen in recent years due to the activities of resellers who threaten the stability of fertilizer supply, especially during the spring field work period.

In response to these challenges, the Ministry of Agriculture is introducing a temporary ban on the export of mineral fertilizers to protect national interests, support domestic agriculture, and promote the stable development of the agro-industrial complex. This decision builds on an earlier ban on fertilizer exports outside the EAEU customs territory.

By implementing these measures, Kyrgyzstan aims to safeguard its agricultural sector and ensure a reliable supply of essential mineral fertilizers for sustainable agricultural development.
