Hungarian Tourist Missing in India: Extensive Search Underway
A Hungarian tourist named Zsolt Puskás has been missing in India since 29 March, sparking an extensive search operation in the northeastern state of Meghalaya. The disappearance of Puskás, also referred to as Zoltán in some reports, has captured significant attention, with both local authorities and international representatives involved in efforts to locate him.
According to reports from The Shillong Times and Telex, Puskás checked into a hotel in Laitumkhrah, Shillong, early in the morning on 29 March. He then hired a taxi to drop him off at Mawsahew village near Sohra (Cherrapunjee) before setting out on foot towards Nongriat, a popular trekking destination known for its picturesque living root bridges. The last confirmed sightings of Puskás were near Mawkawir and Ramdait villages, but there has been no trace of him since.
The Hungarian Embassy filed an official missing person report with local authorities on 2 April, leading to a coordinated search and rescue operation. The East Khasi Hills police department, along with drones, police personnel, Home Guards, and local volunteers, have been tirelessly searching key locations along Puskás’ route, including caves and trekking paths. However, no evidence has been found so far.
The rugged terrain of Meghalaya poses challenges for the search teams, with dense forests, steep cliffs, and caves making navigation difficult. Despite these hurdles, Indian authorities are actively pursuing leads from witnesses and utilising drones to cover inaccessible areas. The Hungarian Embassy is closely monitoring developments and working with local authorities to ensure all resources are being utilised in the search.
At this time, there is no indication of foul play, but the circumstances surrounding Puskás’ disappearance remain unclear. Authorities urge anyone with information to come forward as search efforts continue. The search for the missing Hungarian tourist in India continues, with hopes for a safe and swift resolution.
