Preserving Central Asia’s Heritage: ALIPH-EU Competition on Climate Protection in the Orient

ALIPH and European Union announce grant competition to protect cultural heritage in Central Asia
The International alliance for the protection of heritage in conflict areas (ALIPH), in collaboration with the European Union, has launched a new competition aimed at safeguarding the cultural heritage of Central Asian countries, including Turkmenistan, against the increasing threats posed by climate change and natural disasters. The announcement was made by ALIPH Executive Director Valéry Freland at the Aral Cultural Summit, held in Uzbekistan from April 4-6, 2025.
This initiative, funded by the European Union, seeks to enhance efforts to conserve the tangible and intangible cultural heritage of the region. ALIPH will be responsible for managing the grant process, which will offer two types of grants: small grants (up to €27,000) and medium grants (up to €180,000).
The focus of these grants is to support specific local initiatives that can produce clear and measurable socio-economic outcomes. This competition represents the second event organized by ALIPH in less than a year to address climate threats. The European Union is collaborating with ALIPH in this crucial initiative, working with local authorities and institutions involved in cultural heritage preservation.
Institutions, private organizations, universities, and research centers actively involved in cultural heritage protection are eligible to participate in the competition. Applications will remain open until 15:00 Central European Time (CET) on July 31, 2025. Funding decisions are expected to be announced by December 2025.
For more detailed information regarding the competition and application requirements, interested parties can visit the ALIPH website and access the ALIPH Call for Projects link.
This initiative presents a significant opportunity for Turkmen organizations and specialists working in the cultural heritage preservation sector to secure financial assistance for executing projects aimed at safeguarding the country’s unique historical and cultural monuments from the adverse effects of climate change.
