French President Emmanuel Macron revealed a new extensive renovation plan for the Louvre Museum in his speech in front of the iconic Mona Lisa painting by Italian artist Leonardo Da Vinci. Macron, speaking at the Louvre Museum, announced the “Louvre’s New Renaissance” project, emphasizing the museum’s significant place in French history.
As part of the renovation plan, Macron mentioned that an international architectural competition will be held for the museum’s transformation. The project will be funded by the museum’s resources and is expected to be completed by 2031. One of the key changes will be the relocation of the Mona Lisa painting to a private area within the museum, which will now require a separate ticket for entry.
Additionally, Macron proposed increased entry prices for visitors from outside the European Union, with the new ticket prices set to take effect on January 1, 2026. Laurence Des Cars, the Director of the Louvre Museum, highlighted in a letter to French Culture Minister Rachida Dati that the museum is in need of urgent repairs due to damages in various areas and aging technical equipment.
Despite the challenges, the Louvre Museum remains a popular destination, attracting 8.7 million visitors in 2024. The upcoming renovation project aims to enhance the museum’s infrastructure and preserve its cultural heritage for future generations.
